One of the primary needs of children with special need (CWSN) is that of conducting ongoing assessment. Educational assessment basically involves finding out current functioning of the child or youth in terms of development, language learning skills, Activities of Daily Living Skills (ADL), school subject knowledge and ruling out associated problems. Such assessment is undertaken by the unit of Special education by using formal and informal tests, adapted tools and self devised tools. 

The outcome of the assessment is used for the following purposes: 

• Parent guidance 
• Referral 
• School placement 
• Identifying individualistic educational needs of the child 
• providing individualized educational support.

It is well accepted that language input given during the critical period of language development helps the child in its proper and speedy acquisition of language. Language forms the base on which the educational base is built upon.
